Stl’eleqw (Rice Root)


One of the few traditional starches of the Salish people, the Chocolate Lilly, or Rice Root, grows commonly alongside camas. Steamed in a pit oven or boiled in a bentwood box the soft white roots of this little plant taste vaguely of cauliflower. It is wise to remember when harvesting to leave the smaller bulblets in the moss or soil and only take the large predominant bulb as the smaller bulblets will grow into next years crop!
