Highbush Cranberry Juice & Jelly

One of my favourite things to do on a beautiful fall day is to go down the river in a boat and look for cranberries.  One day, my dad took my sisters and myself in our boat down the Wanipigow River in Manitoba near our cabin.  We were so excited when we saw the cranberries hanging from the bushes over the river; we picked them in bags and our hats too!  My mom took the cranberries and cooked them in a large pot to make juice and jelly.  They smell pretty funny when they are cooking, but taste great when sweetened with some sugar.

Wild Plum Jam

Wild Plum Jam

My Mom told me how, when she was a kid, her Mom used to make many jars of wild plum jam to put away for the winter.  When I moved to my own house in the countryside in Manitoba, I discovered a wild plum bush in our yard!  We had lots of fun picking and eating the wild plums, and used some to make tasty jam – making and eating the jam brought back memories for my Mom and was a new experience for me!
