Perch

Perch is a favourite Indigenous food of people who live around Orillia, Ontario. I remember going perch fishing with my Dad on Bass Lake, not too far from our house. His friend took us out on his boat and showed us the best spots around the lake; sure enough, we caught all kinds of perch! When we returned to shore we had a fish fry for lunch: delicious!

Pickerel

Pickerel – walleye...whatever you want to call this fish but I grew up using the name pickerel. It is my absolute favourite fish! As a kid I remember my mom getting a hundred pickerel on any given day from the commercial fishermen in the late winter and she would fillet and freeze them all in one evening. The best part was that the fillets were guaranteed 99.9% boneless! We ate pickerel 2 to 3 times a week.

Fried Pickerel

Pickerel is best when the catch is fresh. My auntie says that the pickerel is the “prize” fish because it is the best tasting! Heat the shortening in deep frying pan. Dip pickerel fillets into flour on both sides. Fry for about 8-10 minutes on each side until golden brown.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  My favorite way to serve fried pickerel is with some fluffy mashed potatoes and cream style corn with a slice of bannock!
